Google parent Alphabet’s results come up short despite cloud strength

https://siliconangle.com/2022/04/26/google-parent-alphabets-results-come-short-despite-cloud-strength/

Google Cloud hit $5.82B in Q1 sales, up from $4.05B YoY and above estimates of $5.75B, and an operating loss of $931M, down from $974M YoY

Amazon's cloud business grows almost 37%, but slows from last quarter

https://www.cnbc.com/amp/2022/04/28/aws-earnings-q1-2022.html

Amazon's cloud unit grew 36.5% year over year in the first quarter, a bit faster than analysts projected.

Brian Olsavsky (CFO) -

“We saw another strong quarter of innovation and customer engagement in the AWS segment, where net sales were $18.4 billion in Q1, up 37% year over year and now represent an annualized sales run rate of nearly $74 billion.”

“I mean, we're continuing to see what the backlog is, right? It's the increase of AWS customers making long-term commitments for AWS. At the March period ended, we had $88.9 billion balance for that. So that's up about 68% year over year.

And the weighted average remaining kind of life term for those is 3.8 years.”

Satya Nadella - “This quarter, we helped more customers than ever, simplifying and accelerating their cloud migrations. And it's still early days.” & “As a percentage of GDP, tech spend is, on a secular basis, by the end of the decade, going to double.

Satya continuously doubles down on “Data & AI” -

“Data and AI for sure. I mean, the thing that I find really to be something that I think is a long run is going to probably be one of the bigger drivers of our growth and differentiation is our data fabric because we're the only guys who have a complete data fabric from the operational store, that's fully integrated into an analytics engine, that's fully integrated into governance.”

S3E16: Why have searches for GitOps doubled in the past year?

S3E16: Why have searches for GitOps doubled in the past year?

GitOps

https://explodingtopics.com/topic/gitops

Searches for “GitOps” are up 96% over the last 12 months.

The reason for growing interest in the practice is that GitOps can lead to increased productivity, higher reliability and better stability.

GitOps is part of the Infrastructure as Code (IaC) meta trend.

According to E-Topics, Searches for “GitOps” are up 96% over the last 12 months. The mainstreaming of cloud practices and the continued increase in adoption of DevSecOps are two main drivers of accelerating IaC growth.

Hyperautomation

https://explodingtopics.com/topic/hyperautomation

Hyperautomation is the use of technologies to scale the automation of processes within an organization.

Hyperautomation is part of the Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Technology meta trend.

According to Gartner, 80% of finance executives have made plans to implement RPA within their organization.

And Deloitte estimates that 78% of the companies that have already implemented RPA plan to significantly increase investment in this area in the next three years.

The Great Resignation: Why Employees Don't Want To Go Back To The Office

A Microsoft survey of more than 30,000 global workers showed that 41% of workers were considering quitting or changing professions this year, and a study from HR software company Personio of workers in the UK and Ireland showed 38% of those surveyed planned to quit in the next six months to a year. In the US alone, April saw more than four million people quit their jobs, according to a summary from the Department of Labor – the biggest spike on record.

Dominic is back! Dominic, Mike and Zack discuss the AWS Infinidash origin and how everyone needs an AWS Infinidash expert on their team. Another supply chain attack has occurred this time at Kaseya. Finally we discuss once again Zack and Dominic's favorite subject, Kubernetes, but this time in relation to run away cloud spend. Cloud keeps growing and the only reason on premise hardware exists is because it's used to solve a problem cloud hasn't solved for yet.

“There is no return to normalcy,” says Mayer-Schönberger, whose research focuses on the role of information in a networked economy. “The environment people are reentering is fundamentally changed, so we need to reframe how we see our work and ourselves. If there is a reason why we go to a workplace, it needs to be a different reason than the one that we had: that this is the way we’ve always been doing it.”

S2E22: Microsoft pushes low-code deep into the business by turning natural speech into code with GPT-3; state of cloud & a16z’s on-prem report; Rapid7 breach & AWS re:Inforce

The team passionately debates the impact of GPT-3 converting speech to code on the business and software developers. Microsoft introduces this as a low code feature at their Build Conference.

@Mike points out that IT must provide the business with guard rails. “The biz knows how to read and use the data, more so than someone in a technology role. This is the democratization of software development, and data is the next step. It’s going to continue and has to continue.”

@Mike reminds us that Bubble & SquareSpace are empowering users to create the next Amazon or Shopify with no-code.

@Lilac is looking for a low code version of Atlassian. “A CICD type cycle that allows people to manage these type assets, to cycle them and collaborate against them, relate them, fork them, etc.”

A16z pens an article about cloud and repatriation cost but quickly loses credibility with the classic and worn-out Dropbox example. The team debates the report and future of the cloud.

Speed round:

Apple iPad Pro and the Center Stage feature is impressive. @Dominic shares his feedback on the wide camera angle that focuses on the active speaker and zooms out if someone else enters the frame. “Impressive. The iPad camera has been poor UNTIL NOW.“

Rapid7 has a software supply chain breach that has not hit the news like SolarWinds. People are in shock. Companies are going back and reanalyzing.

In-person events…AWS is leading with re:Inforce in Houston this August.

Basecamp has learned nothing and doubled down.

SFDC threw a lone engineer under the bus for an outage…Really Salesforce!? One employee is the reason for everything that has gone wrong, and they should feel bad?

S2E20: Ransomware on the rise with real world consequence; IBMs 2nm announcement and Apple hire/fire

Dominic, Mike and Zack are together again this week to discuss the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack and all that we’ve learned since. People are still the weakest link in social engineering of attacks. Could China has prevented something like this thanks to their great firewall when compared to American or European companies? They also discussed various news items including: IBM surprise 2nm chip rollout which took everyone by surprise; Elon Musk’s Crypto announcements; and Apple’s hire and fire of Antonio García Martínez. Whom coincidentally is an ad tech person and signifies Apples move into ads, or some ads.

Season 2 Episode 19: Misusing Excel with Priya Doty

Season 2 Episode 19: Misusing Excel with Priya Doty

Our guest on the podcast this week is Priya Doty. Priya is the Global VP Product Marketing for IBM’s iconic IBM Z brand and it’s all-Linux sister brand, LinuxONE. Unlike a lot of marketers, Priya has also been a developer, which means she enjoys deconstructing marketing messages by reading technical manuals. Based in Brooklyn, she is a mom, wife, and author of an upcoming fiction novel.

Aside from majoring on the topic of Confidential Computing (and Cloud Security in general), Priya is all about the IBM Z platform, Product Marketing (Top 100 Influencer in PMM 2-Years Running!), and outside of work, writing.

Confidential computing is a cloud computing technology that isolates sensitive data in a protected CPU enclave during processing. The contents of the enclave - the data being processed, and the techniques used to process it - are accessible only to authorized programming code, and invisible and unknowable to anything or anyone else, including the cloud provider.

Gartner has called confidential computing a top trend for 2021, naming it and Fully Homomorphic Encryption as part of a trend for “Privacy Enhanced Computation”.

Why IBM believes confidential computing is the future of cloud security

  2. “The humanities teach us what to do when STEM fails”
  3. The importance of core skills (they’re not soft skills!)
  4. And some truly excellent SF reading recommendations for those who listen all the way to the end
